Background

Stores ran separate POS terminals, kitchen printers, and card readers, so if any one malfunctioned, the entire order flow stalled. The request was to handle everything from ordering to payment to kitchen handoff on a single tablet.

Technical decisions

What we chose, and why it fit

A single Flutter codebase for the tablet app

Stores used Android tablets from different manufacturers, so we needed to support multiple device types. Building natively for each would have doubled the maintenance code; one Flutter codebase covered most devices, leaving only a shortlist of models to verify before store deployment.
