Background

An operator running multiple branches tracked sales in POS spreadsheets, inventory in handwritten ledgers, and staffing in yet another spreadsheet, all separately. Reporting to headquarters meant physically visiting branches to reconcile the paperwork.

Scope

  • Per-branch sales dashboard
  • Inter-branch inventory transfer registration
  • Staff schedule management
  • Separate permissions for branch managers and headquarters
  • Monthly branch comparison report

Technical decisions

What we chose, and why it fit

Data partitioned by branch on AWS, with unified lookup available from the headquarters account

The client started with a handful of branches but planned to keep adding more. Putting all branch data in one table would have degraded query performance as branches grew, so we set up the structure from the start to always narrow queries down by branch identifier.
